'Beautiful People...' is the fourth album from the band, who formed at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in the early 2000s and went on to score a series of hits, from platinum-selling debut album 'A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation' (featuring the huge single 'Let's Dance to Joy Division'), their sophomore album 'This Modern Glitch' which reached Number Three on the UK album charts to, most recently, 2015's Top 5 'Glit...terbug'.
First single on their new album, Lemon to A Knife Fight' has already premiered as Annie Mac's 'Hottest Record' on Radio 1 and the album promises lush, ultra-modern indie soundscapes and celestial solos with their trademark tongue-in-cheek.
This is an incredible opportunity to catch the legendary band in an intimate setting. It's not ticketed, all we ask is that you pre-order the album from us (which you can do in-store at Sound Knowledge or by phone on 01672 511106) or purchase a copy on the night.
Well here we are ! 2018, if like me you are over 40 this sounds like something from the future!! and even odder to think its two years away from 2020, when surely there will be flying cars and hoverboards??
Any how we are now coming up to the second anniversary of owning the cafe and what a few years it has been. Sadly the cafe was in a terrible condition when we took over and so much more money needed spending on things like non leaking gas boilers and cookers, hygienic toilets, safe electrics, you know those sort of things, and we are just starting to recover from needing to do these elements and not all the exciting things which we initially thought we would be doing! We do still allow ourselves the treat of a beautiful Christmas tree and hope you all enjoyed it this past Christmas as much as we did.
This year our plan is to catch our breath, catch up on finances and keep going with some great advancements, one of which is trying to see if we can find more space for lunch time serving (we are sorry if you have struggled to sometimes get a table)! We are also starting again this year with Sound knowledge and live gigs on 1st Feb and welcome back Turin Brakes who were the first band we had in when we initially opened Cafe Thirty8.
We continue to support as many local traders as possible with purchasing our meat from Sumblers, local vegetable suppliers from Melksham, Milk from Wiltshire, ice cream from Rowde, and beer from Ramsbury! We are proud of what we have been doing and that we continue to create jobs and opportunity for local people. we are not going to make unsupported claims about being the best breakfast/ coffee etc etc. we are simply going to say we do our best and hope that continues to be good enough for the majority.
We could not do any of this without you, our loyal and wonderful customers and we do know this, and keep it at the forefront of our minds and we hope it continues to reflect in the food we prepare and the service we give. Please continue to support your local independent traders, keep the small business person a float and keep interest in the high street! Any recommendations you have, specials you would like then feel free to drop us a line or two, we can't guarantee we will do them all but we will listen.
Thanks again everyone and Happy New Year everyone x
Following last year's knockout tour of new twists on Harper classics, the band decamped to France's Studio La Fabrique with legendary producer Tchad Blake behind the desk to record all new material. The resulting long player 'Lies! Lies! Lies!' promises to be an intelligent, yet exuberant album very much rooted in the now from four massively talented musical forces of nature.
The gig will take place here at Club Thirty8 with tickets available from Sound Knowledge opposite us (in-store only). Doors open at 7pm.
Still led by iconic frontwoman Pauline Black and original member Arthur 'Gaps' Hendrickson a reformed Selecter stormed back in 2015 with 'Subculture' and its follow-up 'Daylight' promises to be their most urgent, politically engaged and purely uplifiting music since their Gold-selling debut 'Too Much Pressure'.
It's not a ticketed event, all we ask is that you pick up a copy of 'Daylight' available on CD or vinyl from Sound Knowledge on the night (with the opportunity to meet Pauline and Gaps and get it signed) or pre-order a copy by contacting Sound Knowledge in-store or by phone on 01672 511106.
The singer/guitarist needs no introduction and his previous two appearances here have garnered legendary status among the hundreds of people who turned out to watch him play in the yard, not to mention the thousands who have seen him perform at festivals including Boardmasters, Greenbelt and Towersey.
'Hit The Ground Running' is Newton's sixth studio album, a decade on from his two-times Platinum, Number One smash 'Hand-Built By Robots', and showcases his trademark percussive guitar and skyscraping falsetto.
We're excited to have such a huge star on our stage is truly an event not to be missed, so if you'd like to come along you'll need to pre-order a copy of 'Hit The Ground Running' released on CD on 1st September by contacting Sound Knowledge in-store or by phone on 01672 511106, or pick one up from the store prior to the performance. We can announce that rising London four-piece Flyte will be joining us on Thursday 7th September to play a short, full electric set a before signing copies of their debut album 'The Loved Ones' in-store at Sound knowledge.
Drawing far and wide on the British canon from The Beatles to Nick Drake to Orange Juice to Talk Talk, Flyte's impressive chamber pop is instantly distinctive thanks to all four members contributing to the band's trademark vocal harmonies, recorded live with three voices singing into one microphone instead of overdubs. A process indicative of their overall approach, eschewing Pro Tools in favour of honing their performance until they can deliver a great live take in the studio with producer Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett).
With tracks like 'Echoes' and 'Victoria Falls' already picking up enthusiastic radio support from Radio 1, 6Music and Radio X these guys are set to break through, so don't miss out. Released on Island Records 'The Loved Ones' is available on CD and LP in-store from the 25th August. This band are about to break the market and if you believe the critics are set to make their mark!!
They play at 630pm so come in get a drink and a good spot and be ready to say i was there when it all went big - Good luck Flyte we hope your hard work and great music gives you what you deserve. x
LIVE 630PM SUNDAY 10TH SEPT - NOTHING BUT THIEVES
It's been a meteoric rise for the five-piece from playing in a Southend garage as schoolboys to supporting Muse on an arena tour, headlining the O2 Academy in Brixton and picking up rave reviews for a barnstorming Glastonbury set this year.
We are delighted to welcome these guys to Thirty8. they have performed before in Marlborough from their debut album which hit No. 7 in the chart thanks to a strong clutch of melodic, alternative rock anthems and singer Conor Mason's extraordinary vocals.
Follow-up 'Broken Machine' is informed by the experience of a gruelling two years on the road in support of the first record and the camaraderie that got them through and was heralded by the release of lead single 'Amsterdam' back in May
They will performing with us at 6:30pm so come early to grab a drink and a good spot and afterwards they are siging their new album at Sound Knowledge (when purchased from SK)
Called the 'biggest cult band in the UK' by Q, the Jarman brothers have forged a huge reputation on the British indie scene since their 2004 self-titled debut.
'24-7 Rock Star Sh*t' is the seventh studio album from the band, released fresh off the back of a sold out tenth anniversary tour of third record 'Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever' (which was also reissued for this year's Record Store Day). Seeing the band in such a close setting is an experience not to be missed.
If you'd like to come along all you need to do is pick up a copy of '24-7 Rock Star Sh*t' from Sound Knowledge on CD or LP. You can click 'going' on the Facebook event page to let us know you're coming or contact us or Sound Knowledge on 01672 511106.
As the name suggests Wildwood Kin is a family affair- sisters Emillie (guitar) and Beth (bouzouki/keyboards) Key are joined by their cousin Meghann Loney (drums) with all three contributing vocals to create the sound which led them to win the Bob Harris Emerging Artist of the Year Award last summer as well as being asked by Seth Lakeman to collaborate on his album 'Ballads of the Broken Few'.
The band describe themselves as much fans of Sigur Ros, Radiohead and Explosions in the Sky as of Fleet Foxes, Mumford & Sons and the folk roots that informed their early work. The result is a widescreen, anthemic blend of folk harmony, ethereal electronics and shape-shifting pop-Americana which is not to be missed.
This is a non-ticketed event, all we ask is that you pick up a copy of 'Turning Tides' on CD or vinyl if you attend. Let us know you're coming along by clicking 'going' on the event page on Facebook or contacting us or Sound Knowledge on 01672 511106.
The album has already picked up four star reviews from Q and Mojo, who called 'A Fever Dream' "...potent, frequently explosive stuff". These guys are not to be missed and catching them in such an intimate setting is sure to be a real treat.
You can click 'going' on the event page on Facebook to let us know to expect you but we ask those attending to please pre-order the album (which you can do in-store at sound knowledge or by phone on 01672 511106) or to pick up a copy from sound knowledge on the night.
